Macon – A man was sentenced to prison Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to robbing two Macon businesses at gunpoint.
Dion Khalil Vanzie, 22, of Macon, pleaded guilty to two counts of armed robbery. He was sentenced to serve 20 years for each robbery. The first 15 years on each must be served in prison without the possibility of parole. Vanzie will be allowed to serve his sentences simultaneously.
If the cases had gone to trial, prosecutor Ben Conkling would have presented evidence showing:
Vanzie was recorded on surveillance footage demanding money at gunpoint from a clerk inside Walgreens, 1280 Gray Highway, on July 8, 2018.
On Feb. 4, 2019, Vanzie again was recorded on surveillance footage demanding money at gunpoint from a clerk at Game Stop, 1473 Gray Highway. In addition to money, Vanzie took Xbox games and controllers. He left behind a fingerprint on a game left at the store.
Vanzie was arrested on March 12, 2019.
Speaking after the hearing, District Attorney David Cooke said, “Mr. Vanzie put multiple lives at risk all for the sake of a handful of dollars and video games. For putting these lives in danger, he’s paying a very heavy price. I hope this will not only be a lesson to him, but to anyone else who’d consider such a foolish and dangerous crime.”
