Macon – A man caught on video burglarizing Vineville Baptist Church in 2017 was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday as part of a plea agreement.

Carlos Ismael Montoya, 27 of Macon, must also serve three years on probation and pay $2,459.38 restitution to the church, located at 2591 Vineville Avenue.

If the case had gone to trial, prosecutor Matt Bridges would have presented evidence showing:

Two suspects broke into the church on Dec. 1, 2017, and took gift cards and laptop computers. In reviewing surveillance video, church staff recognized one of the suspects as Montoya, a man who’d visited the church a few days earlier asking for help.

Speaking after the hearing, Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Cooke said, “When Mr. Montoya stole from the church, he hurt their ability to help those who need it the most. I hope he learns from this experience and makes better choices once he’s released from prison.”
